IABC Detroit President McCarthy’s Report

Valued IABC Detroit Member:

I hope you had a safe and healthy Fourth of July. As we move into the second half of 2020, I think we can all agree that so far this year has been quite tumultuous and emotionally charged. And as we still directly experience the impacts and uncertainty of what the future holds, we must continue to be patient, remain kind and do our part to stay safe.

To accommodate the challenges we are all working through, we’ve made some adjustments for the remainder of our 2020 IABC Detroit events. We will not hold the Renaissance Awards this year. Although we will not have a program this year, we are looking at making some exciting changes to the format moving forward in 2021.

Still, this year we have some great virtual meetings lined up that I’m excited to share with you:

  • On August 19 we will be having the first of two panel discussions on Diversity and Inclusion. We will have a variety of experts from organizations throughout Detroit, including IABC Detroit sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and DTE Energy. These panelists play a key role in communications, marketing and human resources and implement tactics to create a diverse workplace for their company or clients.  They’ll discuss their best practices, challenges and ideas.
  • The second panel discussion will take place in mid-September, so keep looking out for our email invites.

Not only are we working to provide you with a solid lineup of upcoming events, we’ll also continue to keep you informed of important resources IABC has developed just for you, including the COVID-19 tool kit for communicators. We’re also looking at ways to expand our chapter’s career outreach program, which we know will be key to some of our membership as we’re exposed to the economic impacts of the pandemic.

Although your membership may feel different right now, it’s still important to your career and to us. Note that the upcoming work I’ve listed above highlights just some of what we have planned over the next few months, and I can’t wait to share more with you.

But in the meantime, feel free to reach out to me directly. As your new IABC Detroit chapter president I welcome your feedback and ideas of how the 2020-2021 board can better serve our membership and show you the true value of what it means to be a part of IABC Detroit.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Shannon McCarthy

IABC Detroit President
